The Switch 2 doesn't try to be the most powerful console. It does what the first Switch did well, just bigger, sharper and smoother.

Buy it if

  • ✓You love Nintendo games: Mario, Zelda, Pokémon
  • ✓Playing together as a family or with friends
  • ✓Docked to the TV and portable too

Skip it if

  • ✕You mostly play shooters or PC games
  • ✕You already own the first Switch and rarely play new games

If you've held the original Switch, the Switch 2 feels familiar right away. The difference is that it's bigger, and everything on screen is much sharper.

A clearly bigger screen

7.9 inches, 1080p LCD, 120Hz, with HDR. The first Switch was 6.2 inches at 720p. Text in RPGs is bigger and sharper, and that alone is easier on the eyes.

Docked to a TV, the console outputs up to 4K.

Magnetic Joy-Con 2

No more sliding rails like the first model. The Joy-Con 2 snap onto the body with magnets, and you press a release button on the back to take them off. Lay a Joy-Con on a table and it works like a mouse in some games.

How it felt the first time you attached and removed the Joy-Con 2: do they feel solid, or loose?

The C button and GameChat

The right Joy-Con has an extra C button. Press it to open GameChat: talk and share your screen with friends while you play.

Battery

Nintendo lists roughly 2 to 6.5 hours depending on the game. Demanding games sit at the low end.

The hours you measured yourself with one specific game at the brightness you usually use.

Should you buy it?

Yes, if you play Nintendo games and want a console the whole family can use. No, if what you need is the strongest graphics for shooters.
